Frequently Asked Questions

We've answered some of the most common questions we get asked about Showerdome® shower tops.

Experience

The shower cubicle is warmer because there is no cold air entering from the top.  It improves heating efficiency resulting in less water being needed to heat the shower cubicle.

The majority of Showerdome® shower top users report that their shower is warm and cozy.  It also dampens external sound creating a quieter and more relaxed environment.

Showerdome Limited have sold over 200,000 units in New Zealand, and we have only ever had to remove 1 unit due to the owner’s extreme claustrophobia.

The Showerdome® shower top is crystal clear, and unless you are staring upwards for the duration of your shower – we are confident you will not even notice it’s there.

No. With a correctly fit Showerdome® shower top, there will be no steam, and no condensation in your bathroom to fog up your mirrors.

Absolutely not.  Although there will be some misting on the underside of the Showerdome® shower top (as there will be on the glass wall) there will never be enough to create droplets.

No.  We strongly advise you to keep your bathroom windows closed while showering if you have a Showerdome® shower top installed.

An open window allows more cool air into the room, and this is what fuels the creation of steam.

Having a Showerdome® shower top is an efficient, and comprehensive solution to eliminating steam in your bathroom, and does not require being used in conjunction with any other means of extraction.

No. With a correctly fit Showerdome® shower top, there will be no steam in your bathroom to condensate, and run down your bathroom walls or ceilings.

No—your breathing is not affected.  A Showerdome® is designed to stop steam, not airflow.

While it covers the top of the shower to prevent warm moist air from mixing with cooler bathroom air (which causes steam), it does not create an airtight environment.  Air enters and exits the shower naturally around the door or any existing gaps in the enclosure.

There is no risk of suffocation or discomfort.

Opening a window can help reduce humidity, but only after steam has already formed.  That steam still settles on mirrors, walls, and ceilings—leading to dampness, heat loss, and potential mould issues.  In contrast, a Showerdome® stops steam from forming in the first place.  This keeps your bathroom warm and dry, reducing the need for ventilation or heating, and creates a far more comfortable showering experience.

Simply put, opening a window deals with the symptoms— but installing a Showerdome® addresses the cause, and prevents the problem altogether.

It might feel cooler at first, but only because there’s no steam filling the room.  With a Showerdome®, you enjoy a warmer, more comfortable shower inside the cubicle, and a dry, steam-free bathroom afterward.

The benefit of less mould, clear mirrors, and better air quality make it well worth it.

General

Simple – there isn’t any! Shower steam (or more accurately – ‘moisture laden air’) is only created when the cold air in your bathroom, meets the warm moist air that your shower creates. It is ONLY when these 2 air masses mix, that steam is created.

When you fit a Showerdome® shower top, you are putting a barrier between these 2 components, and therefore NO shower steam is created.

Learn how it works

Unfortunately, we can’t control the conditions a shower manufacturer chooses to impose on their product warranty.

Over the years we’ve heard of a particular manufacturer raising concerns about heat build-up causing issues with the glue, and liners popping off the wall.  We can confidently say that claims of Showerdome® being the cause, are completely unfounded.

In fact, most customers report that they shower at a lower temperature once a Showerdome® is installed, thanks to the warmer, more comfortable environment it creates.

Ultimately, the decision rests with you to make an informed decision.  We encourage customers to weigh the proven benefits of a drier, healthier bathroom against the theoretical risk of a potential warranty issue.

Yes, less hot water use contributes to a lower carbon footprint.  Plexiglass (also known as PMMA) is not hazardous, and due to its durability – it delays replacement, saving resources and preventing waste.

All Showerdome® shower tops come with a Lifetime Guarantee.

There is approximately 2 cubic metres of cold air within your shower cubicle when you first turn the shower on.

As the water warms up, this cold air will condensate, and will seek out the coldest surface. In this instance, the glass or acrylic shower box.

From the outside looking in, it may appear that the shower is steamed up – however the cubicle itself is completely clear and free of steam as there is simply no more cold air to generate any.

No. We strongly advise you to NOT use an extractor fan while showering if you have a Showerdome® shower top installed.

An extractor fan pulls more cold air into the room, and this is what fuels the creation of steam.

As you don’t have cold air from your bathroom cascading over the sides of your shower – the majority of Showerdome® shower top users report that their shower is warm and cosy, and they are therefore able to reduce the water temperature at the tap.

As well at this, your bathroom maintenance costs will be significantly reduced, as paint & fixtures damage from moisture is not an issue.

Yes.  A Showerdome® shower top will save you time in both cleaning and maintenance.  As no steam is created there is no need to wipe down mirrors and walls.

As well at this, time spent maintaining the bathroom is significantly reduced, as paint & fixtures damage from moisture is not an issue.

Showerdome® shower tops are a passive long-term solution to eliminate steam entirely, while extractor fans and dehumidifiers are reactive and do not prevent steam from forming in the first place.

Extractor fans and dehumidifiers require power, filter cleaning and can be noisy while operating, and both require regular maintenance.

Simply put, extractor fans and dehumidifiers assist with managing the symptoms— but when you install a Showerdome® shower top, you addresses the cause, and prevent the problem altogether.

Measuring

Yes!

Depending on the size of the area you are attempting to cover – there are a couple of options.

If your shower cubicle is only slightly larger than 1200mm, then it’s recommended to use a flat sheet of acrylic with an ‘H’ shaped jointer rail.  The flat sheets come at 400mm wide, so this option is good to cover up to 1600mm shower cubicles.

If you are attempting to cover a space larger than 1600mm, in some instances customers have opted to join 2 x Showerdome® shower top units side by side, again using the ‘H’ shaped jointer rail.

All standard Showerdome® shower tops are blown to a height of 150mm at the apex of the dome.  Therefore we recommend a minimum clearance of 160mm from the top of your shower, to the ceiling, in order to successfully install a Showerdome® shower top.

If this clearance is an issue, we do offer a ‘low blow’ option, which is a perfect solution for tight installs.

Models LB650S and LB700S are lower profile with a height of just 60mm at the apex.  These low blow models are ideal for compact bathrooms with limited ceiling space like in tiny homes, cabins, and motorhomes.

You get all the benefits, without compromising on performance.

Yes!  We specifically manufacture two low-profile Showerdome® with a height of just 60mm at the apex.  These low blow models are ideal for compact bathrooms with limited ceiling space like in tiny homes, cabins, and motorhomes.

Models LB650S and LB700S offer a perfect solution for tight installs, giving you all the benefits, without compromising on performance.

There are 15 shapes and sizes of Showerdome® shower top to fit most square, triangular, round front or rectangular showers.

All Showerdomes are manufactured on blanks that are bigger than required, and are trimmed onsite to fit your shower exactly, by whoever is doing your installation.

Some installations will be more difficult due to the shower design and we strongly recommend that in these instances you use a trained installer. www.showerdome.co.nz/where-to-buy-showerdome/

In order to provide accurate measurements – follow these easy steps:-

• Stand INSIDE the shower cubicle
• Place your tape measure in the middle back corner (where the 2 walls meet)
• Measure from the corner to the inside of the framework on each side
• Ensure you advise the shower shape (square, triangle, curved)

Installation

Yes you can. You will need to confident cutting and drilling acrylic and will require some basic tools.

Please go to https://showerdome.co.nz/installation/ to see the list of tools required and watch the video of an installation.

A standard Showerdome® shower top installation takes a trained installer approximately 90 minutes.

Most importantly, read the detailed instruction booklet provided. Double check your measurements before attempting to cut the acrylic.

If the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, we suggest you attempt to warm the Showerdome® shower top either by standing it in the warmest room in the house, or next to an oil filled heater for some time prior to cutting.

Once ready to cut, you must ensure that what you are cutting to waste is fully supported while making the cut. If you allow the acrylic you are cutting away to hang down, it will cause feather cracks on the actual dome.

Maintenance

No – quite the opposite.  By stopping condensation at its source, Showerdome® keeps both your shower cubicle and the bathroom drier and cleaner, helping you avoid the damp conditions that lead to mould.

For best results, we recommend cracking your shower door open slightly after use, to allow airflow.  This helps ensure your cubicle dries out completely, staying mould-free.

Yes!

There are a couple of options, depending on the specific size you are attempting to cover.

If there is only a small area beyond our standard 1200mm offering, we can join a ‘flat sheet’ of acrylic with an ‘H’ shaped jointer rail.  The flat sheets come at 400mm wide, so can easily accommodate showers up to 1600mm.

If your shower cubicle is larger than this, in some cases, customers have opted to join 2 x Showerdome® shower tops with the H shaped ‘jointer’ rail. This can cover up to 2400mm width / length.

Apart from gathering dust on the top, it is unlikely that your Showerdome® shower top will need much cleaning. You can use a long reach feather duster to flick any dust off.

We recommend using a microfiber cloth with a standard glass cleaner if you feel the Showerdome® shower top needs a more thorough clean. Many of them have anti-static properties (like Pledge), which assist with repelling the dust from settling on the top.

Do NOT use strong cleaners, scrubbing devices or abrasives of any nature.

Yes!  We recommend using a long-reach or extendable duster, which you can find at most hardware stores for just a few dollars.

The great thing is, because there’s no steam or moisture in your bathroom with a Showerdome® fitted, the dust in those high spots stays completely dry—making it easy to remove.  It’s just like dusting any other high surface in your home, with no stubborn grime or buildup to deal with.

Every Showerdome® shower top comes with a LIFETIME GUARANTEE to stay crystal clear.

We recommend that after showering, you exit the shower cubicle, and CLOSE the door behind you.   This stops the warm air from your shower cubicle from mixing with the cooler air in the bathroom, and causing misting on your mirror.  While you are drying and dressing etc, this allows the temperature in the shower cubicle to reduce, and become more in line with the temperature in the bathroom itself.

As you are leaving the bathroom / ensuite, we recommend pushing the shower door OPEN at this point to allow air to circulate.  This will ensure that the cubicle dries out, and therefore no mould or mildew will form.

Every Showerdome® comes with a Lifetime Guarantee to remain crystal clear.  This means you can buy with confidence, knowing that your Showerdome® will outlast the shower that it is installed on.
